Mark’s recent designs include: I Puritani (Gran Teatre del Liceu); Idomeneo and Alzira (Buxton International Festival); The Rake’s Progress and The Enchanted Island (British Youth Opera); Vanessa and Madama Butterfly (Glyndebourne); Jenufa and Pelléas et Mélisande (Royal Swedish Opera); Dead Man Walking (Royal Danish Opera); Die Zauberflöte, Il Turco in Italia, Semele and Il Nozze di Figaro (Garsington); La Cenerentola, I Puritani, Jenufa and Don Quichotte (Danish National Opera); Il Nozze di Figaro, The Mikado, Orfeo ed Eurydice, Magic Flute, Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Don Giovanni and La Traviata (Scottish Opera); I Puritani, Lulu and Pelléas et Mélisande (WNO); Cinderella (Finnish National Ballet); The Memoirs of Sailor (National Theatre of Kuwait); Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (National Tour); and Our Country’s Good (Nottingham Playhouse/Tour).
Previously he has designed ballet productions for The Royal Ballet, Birmingham Royal Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Stuttgart Ballet, Berlin Staatsballet, Ballet Capitole Toulouse, Houston Ballet and London Children’s Ballet, as well productions for theatres and opera houses across the world. He was part of the Glyndebourne lighting department from 1978-1992 and was Head of Lighting at the National Theatre, London from 1993-2003. In 2014 he was awarded an honorary fellowship by Guildhall School of Music & Drama. He was nominated for a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Lighting for Prometheus Bound in New York, received a Knight of Illumination Award nomination for Lulu (WNO) and was a finalist in World Stage Design 2013.
