Proudest career achievements?
I began my orchestral career in the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. At the end of my time there I played for the Sunset Ceremony, marking the return of Hong Kong to Chinese rule. I then moved to South Africa where I was principal clarinet with the Kwa- Zulu Natal Philharmonic Orchestra. I fell in love with the country and enjoyed many visits to the game reserves and was once chased by a rhino whilst on a wilderness trail walk!
My most memorable orchestral experience came when I shared a stage with Nelson Mandela. Just to be in his presence was awe inspiring. It sounds corny but you could actually feel his greatness.
Favourite Northern Ballet production?
The Great Gatsby, without doubt. Richard Rodney Bennett was the most tremendous composer and wrote in a huge variety of styles with complete conviction. John Longstaff did an incredible job with the arrangement and every note is a pleasure to play.
Favourite composer to play?
That's such a tricky question as it depends so much on my mood.. and my reed! As a clarinet player we are continually at the mercy of our reeds which can change completely with no warning! I suppose if I were stuck on a desert island Mozart would be the best choice. His music is pure perfection.
Favourite music to listen to?
I was brought up on Radio 2 and this continues to be the sound track to my life. 70's and 80's pop music are brilliant, uncomplicated, undemanding listening which mean I can get on with chores. I saw Luther Vandross live in South Africa. He was fantastic; a brilliant musician with a beautiful voice and an incredibly polished performer.
